The Doctrine of Spiritual Gifts

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is sovereign in imparting spiritual gifts to the church and every believer, all of which are inferior to love. We believe all believers are to pursue love and desire spiritual gifts, to bring praise to the Lord. We believe that the Holy Spirit does not glorify Himself or His gifts by any action which brings attention to the believer, but He does glorify Christ through spiritual gifts which bring the lost to conviction and repentance, and which build up and encourage believers in their faith, without confusion of lack of peace.

Acts 1:8  |  1 Corinthians 12:4-11  |  1 Corinthians 14:1, 33

We believe that speaking in different languages and the working of miracles in the early days of the Church were for the purpose of pointing to the Gospel, and affirming the apostles of Jesus Christ, and were never intended to be characteristic of the lives of every believer. We believe that speaking in tongues was never the common or necessary sign of the baptism or filling of the Holy Spirit.
